Services

Three jobs and one card that is deliberately idle. None of them need the primary node to be alive, which is the whole point of putting them here.

What it runs

The third copy

A deduplicating backup server holds a copy of every container, keeps its own history, and re-reads and checksums what it stores once a week. It can restore a container on its own, which is the point: if the primary node is gone, the copy is not gone with it.

The watch

It reaches for the primary node every minute and pages the phone after three failures in a row, so an ordinary reboot is not an alarm. This is the half of the alerting that matters: the machine reporting a death is not the machine that died. It also runs a second copy of the alert relay, so the message still leaves the house when the usual sender is itself what failed.

The television

A plain desktop session logs in on boot as an unprivileged user and drives the television over the graphics card. It is the only computer in the estate outside the basement, and the only one anyone in the house touches directly.

The graphics card

The card is idle by decision. It can decode video in hardware and was measured doing so, but the television's streaming services encrypt and decode in software on Linux and never hand the card a frame, and the processor has room to spare at 1080p. Transcription workloads that wanted it are parked. The driver is kept current on the legacy branch, because this generation is past the current one.
